The Legion of Extraordinary Dancers hit So You Think You Can Dance

And man, were they good.  Check out the three guys at 1:43-insane!Web series to premeire next year directed by Jon M Chu.

Legacy & Kathryn break away fear

Ah…it’s so refreshing when a choreographer utilizes the talent of her dancers.  Why would you make a breaker attempt any type of leap or jump that you know is going to end in disaster anyway?

Instead, it is the choreographer’s job to create a dance using the full potential of each dancer to mold together one piece.

Personally, this week of So You Think You Can Dance was lacking compared to prior years.  I think the talent might be a bit weak this season.

But Stacy Tookey’s contemporary to “2 Steps Away” was nothing short of beautiful.  It is a piece in which Legacy Perez is acting as Kathryn McCormick’s fear.

I love when breakers actually learn and execute choreography.  I usually doubt the ability for street dancers to go far in a competition that thrives on contemporary dancers but Legacy is really growing on me already this season.

So you think they can dance?

Mia Michaels lives on after So You Think You Can Dance

SYTYCD_Shankman-thumb-550x307-22072Mia Michaels may have shaved her head and left So You Think You Can Dance but she doesn’t have cancer and she is not finished in her dance career.

Instead, she is trying to focus on new projects that she has been presented with outside of SYTYCD.

“It’s been an amazing five-year journey and I am in a place where I have all these great opportunities that have been presented to me and I am ready to take on all these challenges,” Michaels told People.

The contemporary choreographer is currently in the hopeful process of turning one of her projects into a dance show of her own.

Typical.  A choreographer gets some exposure that turns into an unexpected turn at fame then all of a sudden they are too good for where they came from.

“I knew in that moment and we had not even talked about contracts or anything for the new season yet, so I was just ready to move while I had all this other opportunities in front of me,” Michaels told People.  “Before I got into the season with the dancers — you know actually getting into a room and creating on them — I just thought it was best for me to step out before I did that.”

Sure, there is certaintly more to dance than reality television.  But, knowing how many fans she has developed over the years and dancers she has inspired, I think she could have left in a better fashion.

With that said, I’m curious to see how this season unfolds without Michaels.  I’m also anxious to see what will make her dance show different than any other attempted show that failed in competition to SYTYCD.

What do you think?

So you think you can choreograph?

Since the departure of Mia Michaels, So You Think You Can Dance has some big shoes to fill.

You can now vote for which choreographer you think deserves a slot on the show.

My personal vote goes toward Tucker Barkley and Emily Shock.  I’ve already mentioned Emily Shock as a replacement for Mia Michaels but I can only imagine the work Tucker Barkley would put on the show as well.

Tucker Barkley hits so hard yet is so smooth, clean and controlled.  He would be the ridiculously good one in the middle.

Ah, I’m excited to see where SYTYCD goes choreography wise in the near future.  So much talent out there. . .

Who do you think should be given a shot at choreographing for SYTYCD?

Mia Michaels leaves SYTYCD?

miamichaels2editTwitter has me thinking so at least.

Mia Michaels posted a tweet yesterday that read “I AM OFFICIALLY AN ADORING FAN OF SYTYCD….THANK U FOR 5 WONDERFUL YRS.”

She then posted two more all within the same hour that read “TO CREATE MOMENTS AND MOVEMENT FOR THE WORLD TO SHARE WITH ME WAS A GIFT…..” and “THANKS SYTYCD AND LOOK FORWARD TO WHATS AHEAD FOR ME…LOOKOUT WORLD!!!!!”

Apparently, she announced this as well on her Facebook page yesterday saying that “Today was my official resignation of the U.S. show.”

Michaels won two Emmys for choreography on the show.  The first was for “Calling You” in 2007 and the second was for “Mercy” which she won this year.

What an unfortunate loss for SYTYCD.  Even though, there are other inspiring and moving choreographers out there who I’m sure can fill her place.  One possible woman in my book is Emily Shock, choreographer of Teddy Tedholm’s audition to “If It Kills Me” this year.

I wish the best of luck to Michaels (even though she doesn’t need it).  She had a good run on the show, made her name known to a lot more people, and even won awards.  It’s amazing the fame that comes from reality television these days.

Q&A with Atomic Goofball

Danny Nguyen, (aka Atomic Goofball) is a breaker in Maryland trying to make it as a dancer (while having as much fun as possible).  I had the chance to talk with him after being amazed by him dance.  I’ve learned that life wasn’t always fun for this goofball.

Well now that I know your actual name is Danny Nguyen,  how did you come up with the name Atomic Goofball ?

Well, growing up in school I was always the goofy kid. I was always like a BIG KID, I didn’t have very many friends, in fact while in high school my best friends were in middle school. So always hanging out with a younger crowd fed my goofiness, calling me a goofball. I added the “Atomic” because I thought it sounded cool!

Why did you start dancing and when?

I didn’t purposely try to start dancing, I sort of fell into it. I was on a journey to break out of my shell and seek acceptance from the kids at school (get into some cool activities and groups so that way I had some friends and some things to talk about).  I tried to learn aggressive skating because at the time, that was a really “COOL” thing to do. With many failed attempts I gave up and sitting there I heard music and found a group of breakdancers dancing and having fun! They accepted me for who I was and I felt it in my heart that “this is for me”.  I started between 98-99 technically. I had to take a lot of time off (almost quit) because of my chest surgery.

Tell me about the exciting dance gigs you’ve done in the past and/or present.

WOW! So many gigs! One of my favorite had to have been So You Think You Can Dance.   I’m definitely gonna try out again sometime.  I’ve danced for the Washington Wizards, the Nationals, and the Capitals, was flown out to California to battle Rockadile of ABDC’s Supercrew, and participated in a huge battle called “Who can roast the most” where I was pitted in a 10 round battle with no judges against another bboy (danger dat) from California.  And the biggest gig yet, landing a role on the upcoming Step up 3:D dance movie!

What is your biggest strength?

I would have to say my character and personality.   I don’t know what it is, or how I do it, but when I’m dancing or not I can put on my goofball face and bring everyone else into my world. I don’t have the best moves out there, but I know that I can show the world I am having fun and to let the world in on this fun!

What had been your biggest obstacle?

My biggest obstacle had to be my chest surgery. I grew up with a chest deformity that kids in my school made fun of me for. They called me bird chest, and picked on me. During gym class, I waited for everyone to leave the locker room, or hide in the corner to change out of my gym clothes. Once I was old enough my parents had me undergo the surgery to correct my chest. It was a very very painful recovery and I had some complications where I was in and out of the hospital for weeks. I had to have a drainer plugged into my chest to drain the over flowing blood etc. While recovering, I lost all strength and in crucial pain. My parents and Doctor told me that I could not breakdance anymore. My friends/crew continued to train and the breakdance scene around me improved greatly while I was stuck in a hole. The idea of never being able to dance again hurt me alot let alone knowing that everyone was getting good without me. Breakin is super competitive so if you take a break, your opponents get better. I became depressed and suicidal. I lost motivation and hated everything. I sat in my room, closed my eyes, and promised myself, “Goofball, you will dance again, you will be the best, and people will remember you”.

What are your goals for your future dance career?

I would love to keep dancing forever! I hope to land more gigs on commercials, tv, and of course movies! I plan on moving out to California to hopefully pursue more gigs. I want to teach more!

Do you have any advice for fellow dancers who are trying to make it in the industry?

YES!! It is very important to be YOU! If you are a dancer and you want to shine, you gotta be unique! What other way to be unique than to be yourself! There is only one YOU, show the world why that is! Keep positive and stay strong! Opportunities are everywhere! If you want something bad enough you can get it!!! The only person that can stop you from achieving your dreams is yourself.

Anything else you’d like to say..?

Shouts to my crew Lionz of Zion and Battle snakes! Respect and love!

Check him out at :Twitter, YouTube, Facebook.

Don’t forget to look for his crazy moves in Step Up 3:D next August.

Teddy Tedholm returns home

Well so much for that.  In case you missed it, Teddy Tedholm was sent home after his cha-cha performance.

He was such an early favorite and also recieved a lot of television exposure.  That confuses me.  Why push Tedholm onto America if we don’t even get the chance to vote for him?  I guess they’re hoping he returns.

Tedholm now holds the title as the least gangsta contestant on So You Think You Can Dance.  Which personally, I don’t think makes sense since he made it passed the hip hop round and did quite well?

Oh well, hopefully we see him next year.  His facebook last night said “the least ghetto competitoror in sytycd history… I’ll take it.”  At least he doesn’t seem to be offended.

Get your act together SYTYCD.

SYTYCD season 56?

No really it’s only season six.  They’re giving us a double dose this year, which I must say I can’t complain (only because I have DVR).

Yet, So You Think You Can Dance claims that they are out there looking for America’s favorite dancer.  They look for people that stand out and are unique.  So I wonder why every season it seems that a contemporary dancer is almost always the winner.   Maybe it is because they have been able to pick up the other styles in the short amount of time given.

Or maybe it’s because they’re technique is so ridiculously compelling that it really doesn’t matter.  Except season two when Travis Wall got  stuck with second place.  Hopefully America felt dumb when his piece last season rocked the stage.  At least the show proved it can give great exposure for amazing talent.

Also for eh, not so amazing talent. The audition part of of the show makes a mockery out of dance.  Yes, it is a television show and FOX wants as many viewers as possible.  Personally I’ve never enjoyed watching bad dancing, ever.  I can’t imagine people who love the art would actually like seeing people who “think” they can dance get on the stage.

Why SYTYCD even wastes their time on people who aren’t in the age range or are obviously terrible is beyond me.

s1452655872_185750_6981_bigger  However, look out for Teddy  Tedholm.

My first thought was okay, you look like Travis Wall and you’re using a song that he choreographed to on the show for your audition.  You might have just killed your chances.

My second thought was you instantly captured me with your uniqueness. Oh, that and I love you. Please be able to do other styles.

Tedholm’s Facebook says “[I] think dance is like mashed potatoes. [It] can be creamy or lumpy or somewhere in between… but [I] love it all almost as much as [I] love making it.”

Unfortunately, Tedholm isn’t allowed to speak with the press.  Make sure to check him out on Facebook, Twitter, or YouTube.

Ps. Your mother really named you Teddy TEDholm?

Update: His name is Edward Tedholm. Teddy is a nickname.
