Mia Michaels lives on after So You Think You Can Dance

SYTYCD_Shankman-thumb-550x307-22072Mia Michaels may have shaved her head and left So You Think You Can Dance but she doesn’t have cancer and she is not finished in her dance career.

Instead, she is trying to focus on new projects that she has been presented with outside of SYTYCD.

“It’s been an amazing five-year journey and I am in a place where I have all these great opportunities that have been presented to me and I am ready to take on all these challenges,” Michaels told People.

The contemporary choreographer is currently in the hopeful process of turning one of her projects into a dance show of her own.

Typical.  A choreographer gets some exposure that turns into an unexpected turn at fame then all of a sudden they are too good for where they came from.

“I knew in that moment and we had not even talked about contracts or anything for the new season yet, so I was just ready to move while I had all this other opportunities in front of me,” Michaels told People.  “Before I got into the season with the dancers — you know actually getting into a room and creating on them — I just thought it was best for me to step out before I did that.”

Sure, there is certaintly more to dance than reality television.  But, knowing how many fans she has developed over the years and dancers she has inspired, I think she could have left in a better fashion.

With that said, I’m curious to see how this season unfolds without Michaels.  I’m also anxious to see what will make her dance show different than any other attempted show that failed in competition to SYTYCD.

What do you think?

So you think you can choreograph?

Since the departure of Mia Michaels, So You Think You Can Dance has some big shoes to fill.

You can now vote for which choreographer you think deserves a slot on the show.

My personal vote goes toward Tucker Barkley and Emily Shock.  I’ve already mentioned Emily Shock as a replacement for Mia Michaels but I can only imagine the work Tucker Barkley would put on the show as well.

Tucker Barkley hits so hard yet is so smooth, clean and controlled.  He would be the ridiculously good one in the middle.

Ah, I’m excited to see where SYTYCD goes choreography wise in the near future.  So much talent out there. . .

Who do you think should be given a shot at choreographing for SYTYCD?

Mia Michaels leaves SYTYCD?

miamichaels2editTwitter has me thinking so at least.

Mia Michaels posted a tweet yesterday that read “I AM OFFICIALLY AN ADORING FAN OF SYTYCD….THANK U FOR 5 WONDERFUL YRS.”

She then posted two more all within the same hour that read “TO CREATE MOMENTS AND MOVEMENT FOR THE WORLD TO SHARE WITH ME WAS A GIFT…..” and “THANKS SYTYCD AND LOOK FORWARD TO WHATS AHEAD FOR ME…LOOKOUT WORLD!!!!!”

Apparently, she announced this as well on her Facebook page yesterday saying that “Today was my official resignation of the U.S. show.”

Michaels won two Emmys for choreography on the show.  The first was for “Calling You” in 2007 and the second was for “Mercy” which she won this year.

What an unfortunate loss for SYTYCD.  Even though, there are other inspiring and moving choreographers out there who I’m sure can fill her place.  One possible woman in my book is Emily Shock, choreographer of Teddy Tedholm’s audition to “If It Kills Me” this year.

I wish the best of luck to Michaels (even though she doesn’t need it).  She had a good run on the show, made her name known to a lot more people, and even won awards.  It’s amazing the fame that comes from reality television these days.
